Chinese Civilization

Course description:

This course will be divided into three seminars,within each lasting from 9am to
3pm only once every month in this semester,namely on 27th Sept.,4th Oct.,
and 8th Nov.

The first seminar provides a general introduction of Chinese painting and
calligraphy, which are both tradition and characteristic of Chinese. Many painters
and calligraphers emerged in the development over the past two thousand
years. The course introduces various artistic characteristics of different times,
areas and artists, helping students to gain the ability of appreciating Chinese
paintings and calligraphy and develop a taste for art. In this seminar students
also have opportunity to be guided practicing Chinese painting and calligraphy at
the same time.


The second seminar will introduce and appreciate Chinese music and drama.
Chinese music is unique in its own style with eastern characteristics. Through
this course, students will enjoy a selection of master musical pieces ranging
from ancient to modern times. Students will also gain basic knowledge of
Chinese musical instruments, its melody and characteristics.Chinese drama has
a long history with its peaks in the Yuan Dynasty. Since then, Chinese drama
has been passed on to generation after generation. This course introduces the
origin and changes of Chinese drama, its various drama families, singing tones,
performances, roles and acts. This course will provide an introduction of Chinese
drama and an opportunity for students to watch a typical drama so that they
get to know Chinese drama through visual education.


The third seminar provides an introduction of all aspects of contemporary China,
including general view of politics, economics, culture, society; history since the
founding of the People's Republic of China, the achievements made after the
adoption of the open-door policy, the foreign affairs and international relations,
the Chinese people's life, recreation, etc. Through this course, students will also
have time to experience Chinese cooking and tea ceremony.
